Rediscovering Wellness and Renewal: Embracing The Residences at Rancho La Puerta as Our Cherished Retreat
When my husband Larry and I first heard about the new residential community being built at Rancho La Puerta several years ago, we were instantly intrigued. We had been loyal guests at the famous wellness resort for over 20 years, traveling there annually for hiking, fitness, nourishing food and rejuvenation. The thought of having a home right on the property was a dream come true.
After learning more details from a tour, we decided to become founding members by reserving a fractional ownership casita. It was a leap of faith in some ways, since construction hadn’t started yet. But our trust in Rancho La Puerta made us confident it would live up to expectations. Now, more than two years later, we couldn’t be happier with our decision.
Choosing the Fractional Ownership Model
At first, we considered buying a casita to use part-time and rent out when we weren’t there. But once we learned about the fractional/shared ownership program, it seemed like a better fit. Since we still spend a significant amount of time at our primary home in New York, fractional ownership gives us the flexibility to visit the Ranch several weeks per year without having to rent the casita ourselves.
The program allows us to “reserve” our unit for multiple weeks, or trade weeks through the Elite Alliance exchange program. We can also reserve a second unit to host family or friends. This turned out to be one of the biggest benefits, as the casitas are designed for comfortable socializing and entertaining.
The Buying Process
Working with our sales representative Karla made the entire process smooth and enjoyable. She patiently answered our endless questions and kept us up to date through each stage. We formed a friendship along the way which made it extra special.
Since construction hadn’t begun yet when we put down our deposit, we relied heavily on the floor plans, renderings and maps. Karla arranged for us to meet with The Residence’s general manager and developer representatives so we could gain a deeper understanding of the vision and goals of the community. We left these meetings feeling confident it would meet the high standards of Rancho La Puerta.
Another benefit of being founding members was the opportunity to provide input on design features and amenities. The developer incorporated suggestions from owners through surveys and feedback sessions, making it truly feel like our home.
Stepping Inside Our Casita
One of my initial concerns was that the completed homes might not match the artistic renderings. But I’m thrilled to report our casita exceeded expectations in terms of beauty, quality and attention to detail.
The beautifully toned natural stone blends seamlessly with the landscape. Inside, the home is filled with light thanks to the abundant windows. The fixtures, hardware and furnishings are high-end yet comfortable. We especially appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, where we’ve enjoyed preparing wonderful healthy meals.
The luxurious bathroom features a deep soaking tub and a huge walk-in shower. Walking outside, we’re greeted by the private courtyard with chaise lounges and our own hot tub – perfect for stargazing on cool evenings.
Stepping Outside the Gates
Beyond our casita, we’re enamored with the entire residential village meticulously carved into the valley terrain. Roads and walkways lined with local stone meander through the community, connecting the public amenities situated throughout. These will include a community center, pool, fitness studio, tennis courts, pickleball and bocce courts, an organic farm, restaurants and more.
The grounds are thoughtfully landscaped with native plants like lavender and rosemary, along with olive and shade bearing trees. There is an incredible sense of privacy, tranquility and security thanks to the gated access and strategic home placement. Yet it’s just a short walk or shuttle ride to the main Rancho La Puerta facilities.
Connecting with Community
Opportunities for meaningful connections abound within this neighborhood. Between chance encounters on our morning walks, organized social events and gatherings with fellow owners, we’re developing wonderful new friendships here.
Many owners are interesting, civic-minded professionals looking for more balance in their lives. We regularly have stimulating conversations about current events, health topics and philanthropy. While the group is diverse in many ways, we share common values around family, intellectual curiosity, wellness and community.
We frequently invite new acquaintances over for a glass of wine in the courtyard or make plans to carpool into town for dinner. I know these friendships will enrich our lives for many years to come.
The Local Flavor
An unexpected delight has been discovering the vibrant town of Tecate that surrounds Rancho La Puerta. While Tecate is still relatively undiscovered, it offers authentic local experiences, from mouthwatering street tacos to higher end cuisine.
The Ranch has a treasured, longstanding history with the community too. Many employees live in Tecate and rely on the Ranch for stable jobs and forward-thinking benefits – another reason why supporting the region is important to us.
Family Traditions in the Making
Larry and I are eagerly looking forward to the days when our daughters, grandchildren and extended family will join us here. Having a generous casita designed for hosting multigenerational groups makes that dream achievable. We envision our casita becoming a gathering place for future family reunions, celebrations and wellness retreats.
While the kids splash in the pool and explore hiking trails, we’ll introduce them to time-honored Ranch traditions like relaxing in the community amenities before dinner. Meals will consist of garden-fresh salads and produce from the organic farm. Mornings might start with a group stretch class, followed by tennis and long leisurely brunches.
Continued Growth Ahead
As owners, we understand this is still just the beginning. There is much more progress to be made over the coming decade as the buildout continues. We’re committed to this being our health and wellness haven for the rest of our lives, and hopefully to pass down through generations.
The team continues to communicate updates openly and frequently. They welcome our input through surveys, focus groups and owner association meetings. We’re confident that our voices are heard, and that decisions are made thoughtfully and strategically.
Advice for Potential Owners
For those considering purchasing at The Residences, we can wholeheartedly say go for it! Try to spend time at the property first to get a true feel for the Ranch and residential village. Consider how you plan to use the home now and in the future. Study the map to choose a homesite based on priorities like views or proximity. Reach out to the sales team for their invaluable guidance.
This is a rare opportunity to secure a foothold in a one-of-a-kind wellness community. We view our casita not just as a vacation home, but an investment in our family’s health, wellbeing and bonding for generations to come. The experiences we’ll share in this special place are priceless.
